Ornamental Tree Pruning & Care

A mature tree, regardless of species, is a thing of beauty. Properly pruning will help your trees to develop into a majestic structure which is the perfect combination of science and art. We, at Arbor Culture, practice what we preach.

NEWLY PLANTED TREES

The goal at this stage of growth is to guide the trees into a strong structure that will provide the framework of a mature specimen.

A YOUNG LANDSCAPE

Within 5 years of installation, a landscape will need corrective pruning. Done properly, it will stimulate flower production while enhancing the natural form and character of the tree.

MAINTENANCE AND VISTA CREATION

Whether it's to shape a tree to fit a particular look or to create a vista, the requirements of the tree must be considered. Our team will guide and educate you as to what can be done, what can't be done and what should be done.

MATURE TREES

Generally, the most common types of pruning on a mature tree involve Crown Cleaning, Crown Thinning, Crown Raising and Crown Reduction. Crown Cleaning is the selective removal of dead, diseased, broken or weakly structured branches from a tree crown. Crown Thinning includes crown cleaning as well as removal of branches to increase sunlight penetration and air circulation. Crown Raising removes the lower branches of a tree in order to provide clearance for buildings, signs, vehicles, pedestrians and vistas. Crown Reduction is a method to reduce the size of a tree. Properly done, branches are cut back to a lateral limb that will assume dominant growth.

Improper pruning practices, such as topping, involves cutting limbs back to a stub, bud or lateral branch not large enough to assume apical dominance which will lead to branch die back, decay and excess sprout production. The tree will grow into a very unnatural looking specimen.

PRUNING

Proper pruning not only enhances the beauty of your trees, but it is necessary for their continuing health and vigor. Removing dead wood, correcting weak branching habits, reducing wind resistance and improving overall appearance and safety of your trees is of the utmost importance in any landscape maintenance plan. Correct pruning techniques also improve the insect and disease resistance of a tree. Done regularly, proper pruning will help your last for generations.

Arborist ANSI A300-1995 3.2-A professional who possesses the technical competence through experience and related training to provide for or supervise the management of trees and other woody plants in the residential, commercial, and public landscape. An Arborist is someone whom, through education and training is certified and/or qualified to practice arboriculture. Some states require that a certified arborist does many of the arboriculturai tasks e.g., pruning, cabling, fertilizing and pesticide application. This certification process was originally set up through the Department of Consumer Protection and now is run through the Department of Environmental Protection. Arboriculture is a combination of art and science where the application of federally mandated ANSI professional standards and techniques are developed so we can improve the condition of shade, ornamental and fruit trees. Our practices include pruning, cabling, bracing, fertilizing, aeration, control of insects and diseases, landscaping, tree planting, designing, wildlife management, and consulting. The arborist is supposed to be knowledgeable about the typical growth habits and preferred site location and conditions of healthy trees and is able to diagnose problems from the obvious insect infestation to the less obvious environmental stresses such as changes in soil grade, pollution, drought, etc., that affect tree health.

Services include: special tree pruning, maintenance and vista creation, crown cleaning, crown thinning, crown raising and crown reduction.
